Here's to a PLAYful 2014

My aim for this year is to be more playful,
to give myself permission to actually DO the things I want to do,
instead of thinking about what I want to do, but never doing it.
To worry less,
to celebrate more.
To pursue laughter and joy whether or not I have earned or deserve them.
I will stop beating myself up and give myself unconditional love.

The short version…
Here is a metaphor for what I'm trying to accomplish this year…

This year I get to have dessert
without ever asking if I have eaten all my vegetables.

Happy Thanksgiving Eve!

Are you cooking? I'm cooking, but I'm not cooking what I should be cooking. Here's a slide show of putting together TONIGHT'S dinner when I really should be making Turkey side dishes.

Happy Thanksgiving! May your turkey be juicy and your sides so delicious that your mother-in-law asks for your recipe. May none of it end up on your thighs.

Meal Plan Monday

This week I've planned meals for specific days as dictated by use-by dates of the meat I purchased & which nights I have very little cooking time. Tuesday I will pre-cook the taco items that need cooking & heat them up when we return home from appointments.

Menu Plan Monday & My Meal Planning Process

I have a new meal planning process that I thought I would share.

I don't assign meals to specific days of the week. I choose a few meals that I'll make during the week, this leaves me wiggle room. Since my husband seldom eats dinner at home, I end up with leftovers & plan fewer meals. This way I'm planning for what is likely to happen & I don't end up having to toss food that's past it's expiration date.

I've recently begun using the website http://www.workflowy.com for organization. I've integrated it into my meal planning.

This week I began with leftover meat in  my fridge (sale meat for which I had no specific plan when I bought it.)  I listed the meat including the sell by or use by date so that I could easily remember what I had without having to go look in the meat bin of my refrigerator. I also have a link to my grocery list so that I can get there quickly. I mark each meal as completed as I make it (I liked to see items crossed off the list.) The next week when I make a new plan, I delete them. With Workflowy you can choose if you want to display or hide completed items.

Screen Shot 2012-05-21 at 10.19.19 AM

This week I have leftover turkey sausage & chicken breasts so I set about meal planning based on those items.  I've added the recipes I will make with each dish & where to find them.

******(Update I no longer use this app or website, it stopped working, it wouldn't sync and started saying certain items like onions were already on my list and simply would not add them!)********
While I was building my meal plan I also have a tab open at http://www.groceryiq.com - This the grocery/shopping list app that I use on my phone. I love it because it's available for Android, iPhone (& iPad), Blackberry & as a website. I have it on my phone (android), my iPad & iPod Touch, and I've shared my list with my husband who has the app on his Blackberry. I can add to my grocery list no matter what device I have in my hand when I think of items to add, and it will be synced to all my devices. I can also send my list to an email address or print it from the website. Grocery IQ has a barcode scanner, so when I run out of a pantry staple I scan the empty box using my phone camera - and it adds that item to my grocery list. I've also found it's handy if my husband goes to the store because he may not know which type of Ritz crackers I buy, but if I've scanned the item it lists specifics and usually shows a picture.

So I've added to my grocery list & will take my phone with me to the market when I go shopping. I used to use a paper list, but I was often losing it, or forgetting to take it with me, thinking of items to add to it while I was at the doctor's office, or leaving it sitting on the seat in the car, in the parking lot of the supermarket. Keeping my grocery list on my phone has been a great solution for me.

This week I chose 1 cookbook - The Pioneer Woman Cooks by Ree Drummond, and a stack of 3 magazines. I knew what my meats were so I looked through the indexes (I love magazines with a recipe index in the back!) for recipes that used those items. When I wasn't finding anything for boneless skinless chicken breasts that tickled my fancy & went well with the potatoes I wanted to make, I searched for chicken recipes on http://www.cookscountry.com a site with which I have a paid membership. The quality of the recipes on this site make it worthwhile (to me) to pay a membership to have access to their full history of recipes (I believe that access to recipes from the current season of their program is free.)  I don't like to waste my time with recipes that turn out to be no good and I find that sites with user submitted recipes have a large percentage of those. I guess I'm picky.

A Self Reminder

Why do I feel discouraged?
Why do the shadows come?
Why does my heart feel lonely and long for heaven's home?
For Jesus is my portion
A constant friend is he.

How I Saved Christmas: Tales of the Half-lit Tree

2011-12-11_15-01-21_781 cropPre-lit tree is getting old. Last year pre-lit tree had some dark patches. This year pre-lit tree has a whole dark middle. I tried to fix it. The man of the house tried to fix it. Even armed with fancy short detecting technology pre-lit tree refused to light.

I tried to buy a new pre-lit tree, but the only trees available at such a late date had purple, black, or orange needles. Think Dr. Seuss.

TreeGetImageSo today as I ate lunch I resigned myself to Christmas with half-lit tree. Once I had resigned myself to the situation, as it generally goes, the creative problem solving side of my brain kicked in. So off I went to the drug store to buy an extension cord & a set of 100 white tree-lights. I got some sets working using the extension cord & the few dark branches that were left got wrapped in the supplement set of lights.

Isn't that more like it!

Not A Scrapbook

I'm at a scrapbook retreat. It's been wonderful, but suddenly...
Twitter
It's not a scrapbook. It's not a journal. It's a picture capturing how I feel in this moment.

Isn't It Fall Yet?

The kids have been back to school for a few weeks now, I've been drinking Pumpkin Spice coffee all week. After a record run of 100+ heat (110 if my backyard thermometer can be trusted) and not much rain, I'm ready for Fall. Not to mention I want a good chill that will kill the mosquitoes!
Photobucket
This weekend we finally caught a break, our weather dropped into the 90's and it was heavenly. Last night I actually wrapped a blanket around my shoulders as I sat on the back patio with my husband.

I'm looking forward to some more cool nights so we can enjoy our new patio & this nifty new fire feature that we got on clearance from the patio store. I guess there was not a lot of call for fire on summer nights here in Houston.

I'm just about ready to start making Pumpkin Pasta, again!
How about you. Are you ready for fall? What are you most looking forward to?

Purpose: A Quote For Staying On Course.

I find myself in a difficult season of life. I find myself often very sad, very discouraged. This is not the way I imagined my life in the enthusiastic blush of youth. Today I came across this quote by Mother Theresa. I find comfort & encouragement in this reminder that the ultimate result is beyond my control, it is only up to me to do MY best, and to value my best regardless of outcome.

"People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind,
people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful
you will win some false friends and true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank,
people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,
someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,
they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today,
people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway."

How Much Is Enough? MY Crafting EQ

The class I've been waiting a year and a half for has finally begun. Library of Memories is now called Finding Photo Freedom.

I thought I'd share with you my EQ (enough quotient) this is about what we can realistically get done. If we can do more that's great, but the idea here is to be realistic about what we can accomplish and eliminate guilt over expecting too much. so here's mine.
Big Picture Classes
Weekly
  • Digital Housekeeping - 15 min 3x's weekly. This includes importing photos & digi elements & maintaining my Digital organization system.
  • Time in Craft Room - 15 min 3x's or total of 45 min weekly. At present the project is making the room habitable again!
  • Work on primary online class.
Monthly
  • 1 double page spread, monthly. I'm sick of feeling guilty! Anything else is gravy.
This Year
  • One Little Word
  • Library of Memories / Finding Photo Freedom
  • Start taking photos, again
  • Quit hitting delete on photos of me
Home

  • Display some photos in the house.
    Probably this will be in a digital photo frame, but I need to find a spot for it.
Online
  • I have given myself permission to do whatever I feel inspired to do & nothing more.

Just Curious Days 4 & 9

I'm taking a class. 21 days of prompts to help me form a habit of curiosity. After all curiosity and creativity go hand in hand.

Day 4 Our assignment was to go out and learn about something new.

Day 9 our assignment was to cook something new.
I customized a digital postmark stamp - I put the name of the class on it and the name of the day's exercise. I also update the number in the top right of the card to indicate the day of class the assignment is from.
I created the pages in Photoshop Elements 9 then printed them out and added my journaling.

New & Favorite Music

Today I'm ordering some new music so I thought I'd share what I'm getting, as well as some of my favorites. I'm testing out the beta of Mardel's affiliate program, I also have some cute Embellish Your Story home decor items listed below the Title Bar of my blog - I love that line! If you follow one of those links there is a video under the "related media" tab that shows how to embellish the words.

Snowless Snow Day

Today shall be known hereafter, as The Snowless Snow Day.

A nearly invisible glaze of ice covers everything.
The grass is crunchy.
Branches crackle softly.

Show Me Your Desktop: February 2011

I got a new laptop for Christmas. I'm curious to see how things change over the next year so I've captured my desktop for future reference. I think I'll do this once a month & see what develops.

Basketball and a Shiny Sink

Feel like I need to go all out on something, today. I was real tempted for it to be a guiltless no-work day... but I couldn't convince myself that I could really do it guilt-less-ly so decided it wouldn't be that.

I ended up joining Fly Lady again. So I have bleach soaking in my kitchen sinks & in my downstairs bathroom. I've set the timer for 1 hour, which is the suggested amount of soak time, meanwhile I'm going to clean the downstairs bathroom and my stove irons are in the dishwasher. When the sinks are done, so am I. No more work for me for the rest of the day. I think I'm going to pull out the cushion on the lounge chair & read in the sun in the backyard!

I'm setting an alarm on my phone so that I can be in the driveway playing basketball when Ethan's bus drives up. I'll bet he won't be able to resist playing with me. My goal is that he'll throw the backpack down in the driveway & be playing before ever setting foot in the house. !!
We're going to embrace the weekend, straight out of the gate!
