Illumination of Rouen Cathedral (Updated Impressionism Video)

We spent 2 days docked in Rouen. There were so many beautiful old buildings to see, lovely shops, confectioners & bakeries. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Rouen. On the second evening we walked out to to see a light show that is projected onto the cathedral.

This presentation celebrates Impressionism and art. Rouen is near Giverny which boasts Monet's beautiful gardens. Monet painted Rouen Cathedral more than 20 times. I've updated this video this one will play on my blog.  The one I had linked previously was edited down quite a bit, this one shows all the transitions & the part at the end where it's as if the cathedral  is rendered in paint. The waterlilies & flower petal sequences are shown in full, now. If you enjoyed the original video, this one is even better!

Rouen has a strong connection with Joan of Arc. She was imprisoned, tried & burned at the stake in Rouen. They have built a modern church in her honor. This presentation is entitled Jeannes (Joans)

Cut Down on Cross Contamination

Great tips for your kitchen from America's Test Kitchen. I already do a number of these, but I still learned some things. When I pound chicken breasts I put them inside a freezer grade zip-loc bag, this way I prevent any splatter from getting on surrounding items.

Get Glasses Un-Stuck

I've heard that you shouldn't stack glasses (or glass bowls) while they are wet, because that makes it more likely that they will be stuck together next time you want to use them (something about the water creating a seal.) Here's a tip from America's Test Kitchen for how to safely un-stick glass vessels that have stuck together.

Do You Know TED? Using Video To Re-invent Education

Have you heard of TED Talks? I discovered them when I stumbled across a video of a talk given by Temple Grandin. TED is self described on its website as
TED: Ideas worth spreading, Riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world. You can watch talks on the TED website, you can subscribe to them in iTunes as either a video or audio podcast. I watch them and handful at a time on the podcast channel of my Apple TV. Some topics are of more interest than others, but I always find something thought provoking.

I'd like to share this talk with you
Salman Khan: Let's Use Video To Re-invent Education.

What is it about Chick-fil-a

What is it about Chick-fil-a that makes us love it so much? Is it just in certain parts of the country? Is it a Southern thing? Is it the tea? Share the love...

It's just the dark Before The Morning

I've been having a hard time of it, lately. My husband has been working & traveling a lot, I've been struggling with some day to day things with Ethan and on top of that Ethan and I keep getting sick. I've gotten to feel (again) like we're just trying to get through every day. I got a new CD, today & the words of this song jumped out at me and encouraged me. I've listed the lyrics below the video if you just want to read the words.

Before the Morning
by Josh Wilson

Do you wonder why you have to,
feel the things that hurt you,
if there's a God who loves you,
where is He now?

Maybe, there are things you can't see
and all those things are happening
to bring a better ending
some day, some how, you'll see, you'll see

Chorus:
Would dare you, would you dare, to believe,
that you still have a reason to sing,
'cause the pain you've been feeling,
can't compare to the joy that's coming

so hold on, you got to wait for the light
press on, just fight the good fight
because the pain you've been feeling,
it's just the dark before the morning

My friend, you know how this all ends
and you know where you're going,
you just don't know how you get there
so just say a prayer.
and hold on, cause there's good who love God,
life is not a snapshot, it might take a little time,
but you'll see the bigger picture

Would dare you, would you dare, to believe,
that you still have a reason to sing,
'cause the pain you've been feeling,
can't compare to the joy that's coming

so hold on, you got to wait for the light
press on, just fight the good fight
because the pain you've been feeling,
it's just the dark before the morning
yeah, yeah,
before the morning,
yeah, yeah

Once you feel the way of glory,
all your pain will fade to memory
once you feel the way of glory,
all your pain will fade to memory
memory, memory, yeah

Would dare you, would you dare, to believe,
that you still have a reason to sing,
'cause the pain you've been feeling,
can't compare to the joy that's coming

Would dare you, would you dare, to believe,
that you still have a reason to sing,
'cause the pain you've been feeling,
can't compare to the joy that's coming

com'n, you got to wait for the light
press on, just fight the good fight
because the pain you've been feeling,
it's just the hurt before the healing
the pain you've been feeling,
just the dark before the morning
before the morning, yeah, yeah
before the morning

More Reasons To Love Kindle

This is a YouTube video comparing several popular E-readers it wraps up with a show-down between The Kindle 2 and The Nook. It is about half an hour in length, but is of interest because it shows the different way you accomplish different tasks on The Nook and on the Kindle. I am pleased to see that the Kindle sweeps the competition (since I own one and am unlikely to spend a wad of money on another e-reader anytime soon.) I also actually learned 2 capabilities that I did not know about (ability to search Wikipedia being one of these.)

I found this video at The Reading Edge Podcast Blog

Temple Grandin: The world needs all kinds of minds

Have you heard of Temple Grandin? She is a brilliant autistic woman. My brother has been telling me about her books. I bought Thinking in Pictures but haven't read it yet. HBO has made a movie about her starting Claire Danes, they've been playing it the past few weeks and it's available on demand right now if you have Comcast & HBO. The movie is entitled Temple Grandin.

Purpose: Utilizing Google Reader

My One Little Word for 2010 is Purpose. Learning to better utilize Google Reader is one of the ways I intend to be more Purposeful this year. Now that I have begun to use it, I have found that I can read several blogs in the amount of time it used to take me just to decide which blog to visit. Google Reader keeps track of the blogs I want to follow and shows me posts I haven't read yet. Its on the web so I can access it from any computer & even from the web browser on my smartphone by going to reader.google.com on my phone.

Here is a GREAT Video with some tips for using more features of Google Reader. I learned about some new features & ways to use them. If you're completely new to Google Reader jump down to the 2nd video: Google In Plain English.

Google Reader Tricks for Craft Bloggers from Diane Gilleland on Vimeo.

Google Reader In Plain English

I was really reluctant to use Google Reader because I was afraid I would spend even MORE time online, but I find that using Google Reader actually allows me to be more intentional and productive about what I am reading than before I started using it. I get on, I look around and then I log off and I am able to avoid a lot of advertising too!
